New Autism Study by Jill James of the University of Arkansas Provides Additional Evidence of Harm from Thimerosal, Says Author of New Book on the Subject

A new study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (an article on the study can be view at http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/news/nation/10409744.htm) showing low levels of glutathione in autistic children is hugely significant in the effort to link mercury exposure to childhood disorders such as autism,” says David Kirby, author of EVIDENCE OF HARM: MERCURY IN VACCINES AND THE AUTISM EPIDEMIC: A MEDICAL CONTROVERSY (St. Martin’s Press, April 2005, $24.95 Hardcover, ISBN: 0-312-32644-9) -- a disturbing, important book that examines both sides of the brewing controversy over thimerosal in vaccines.

Kirby says that the work of Jill James, which shows how a genetically altered metabolism can play a role in blocking the body’s ability to excrete heavy metals such as mercury, is “one more piece of this complicated puzzle that is dovetailing into a workable theory.” The work of Jill James is explained in great detail in Evidence of Harm. She found that autistic children cannot properly shed mercury that they received through vaccines, maternal fish consumption and other sources, because of extremely low levels of sulfur-based proteins, such as glutathione. “These sulfur-based substances naturally bind with heavy metals to eliminate them from the system,” Kirby says. “Without them, mercury exposure becomes much more problematic.”

It is interesting to note, Kirby adds, that these sulfates belong to a class of proteins called thiols. “A synonym for ‘thiol’ is the word ‘mercaptan,’” he explains, “from the Latin mercurium captans, which means, literally, ‘mercury capturer.’ It may be that children born with low thiol levels were genetically set up for toxic mercury exposure.”

DAVID KIRBY is available to discuss the most recent study by Jill James and how her work fits into the larger context of finding a link between mercury exposure in vaccines and the development of autism, ADD, ADHD and other epidemic disorders.
